What is the difference between 6 mm laminate and 7 mm laminate?

I am installing some laminate in my home. I have already installed 7 mm laminate in my tv room which gets pretty high traffic and it is holding up perfectly. I am wanting to save some money by finishing my home with 6 mm laminate throughout the formal living room, hallway and my daughters room and maybe my bedroom if there is enough left over. I have looked all over the internet trying to find out the big difference between 6 mm & 7 mm laminate. The areas where I would like to put the 6mm is next to the front door (heavy traffic), throughout the living room (medium to low traffic) down the hallway (high traffic) and in my daughters room (high traffic). Is there really much of a difference?? I realllly want to save money but I also don't want to just get the cheapest stuff out there. Can someone tell me from experience the quality and durability of 6 mm laminate such as putting heavy furniture down on it (I may put a large area rug down first). Thank you

  1. A silly millimeter, makes the difference
  2. I'll tell you what I tell everyone with a flooring question. Terrazzo.
  3. You may not like what you hear from me, but at least it is honest, and the right answer. In high traffic areas you usually go for at least 12mm or greater. 12-15 is usually recommended. If of course it is a real high traffic area. If not, but well worn, you can go as little as 9 or 10mm and yet still risk a bit of wear. 6mm is almost ALWAYS reserved for a VERY lightly trafficked area. It does not hold up well after a year or three of unusually, and unintended, wear. Additionally, anything less than 9mm will easily succumb to any weight put upon it. It WILL leave dents and submissions in the flooring. I am sure that this is not your intent, nor your goal, and will advise you properly. Install NOTHING less than 12 mm all around. You will, at least, ensure yourself from failure in the flooring. You WILL spend more, but you will be happy with the result(s). I GUARANTEE IT
